Baseball Outlasts 320-Rival Widener, 6-4

Box Score

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Led by a two-RBI day by sophomore designated hitter Scoop Ruxin, the Swarthmore College baseball team gutted out a 6-4 win against the 320 rival Widener Pride on Tuesday afternoon at Clothier Field.

Ruxin, sophomore catcher Joe Rizzo, and junior third baseman Cody Ruben each picked up a pair of hits. Senior Rory McTear provided excellent outfield defense, while freshman pitcher Nate Booth threw five solid innings in relief to earn the win.

A pitcher's duel from the outset, the game remained scoreless through three innings, as Swarthmore's Joe Warren pitched the first four innings capably. The Pride broke through with two outs in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead, but the Garnet answered quickly in the bottom of the inning as McTear scored the tying run on Rizzo's infield single and a defensive error.

Swarthmore took a commanding lead in the fifth, scoring four times before the end of the inning. Junior first baseman Nicko Burnett's sacrifice fly put the Garnet ahead by one, and a pair of two out hits by Rizzo and Ruxin scored three more to give Swarthmore a 5-1 lead.

Widener battled back, scoring twice in the sixth and taking advantage of a pair of seventh-inning errors to close the gap to 5-4; however, Booth kept the scoring from getting out of hand, and the Garnet rewarded him with a seventh-inning insurance run as sophomore shortstop Danny McMahon worked a bases-loaded walk. Booth finished the game with a pair of hitless innings, securing Swarthmore's 6-4 victory.

The Garnet looks to keep the ball rolling on Wednesday at PSU-Abington. On Saturday, the Garnet returns home to open Centennial Conference play with  a doubleheader against Dickinson College.
