Box Score 2 SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Sophomore Luke Alventosa's complete-game six-hitter led the Swarthmore baseball team to a split with the Oneonta Red Dragons on Saturday, as the Garnet fell 18-3 in Game 1 before rebounding for a 4-1 victory in Game 2.
Alventosa struck out four in the seven-inning win, and was supported by a three-hit game from senior right fielder Tim Kwilos. Sophomore designated hitter Scoop Ruxin and freshman third baseman John Lim each collected two hits in the game, and sophomores Danny McMahon (shortstop) and Joe Rizzo (catcher) provided stellar defense.
The Garnet appeared to be against a wall within the first minutes of game 2, as the Red Dragons loaded the bases with nobody out, but Alventosa coaxed a grounder back to the mound, which he turned into a 1-2-3 double play, before recording the third out to end the frame with no damage. Swarthmore threatened in the bottom of the inning, putting runners on second and third with nobody out, but also failed to break through.
A two-out hit put Oneonta on the board in the second, and they threatened to expand their lead in the top of the third with a leadoff triple, but a play at the plate and a pickoff at third allowed Alventosa to escape unscathed. The Garnet answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning; with Kwilos and Lim on second and third, an error on junior first baseman Nicko Burnett's grounder to short tied the game before Rizzo singled home the go-ahead run.
After the third inning, Alventosa did not allow a hit for the remainder of the game.
With the team nursing a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth, Ruxin singled to open the inning. A sac bunt and a stolen base by pinch runner Gregory Cox put the insurance run on third, and a strikeout/wild pitch allowed Cox to score. A throwing error on Lim's bunt single later in the frame gave the Garnet a three-run advantage that Alventosa would hold until play concluded in the seventh.
In Game 1, Oneonta jumped on Swarthmore's pitching early, opening a 3-0 lead in the first and taking a 6-2 advantage into the fifth, when they scored ten runs to blow the game open. One of the Garnet's few bright spots was sophomore pitcher Samer Nashed, who came on in the middle of the sixth and threw two scoreless innings to finish the game.
Swarthmore returns to action on Tuesday, as they face 320 rival Widener at Clothier Field. Action is set to begin at 3:30.
