Baseball Falls Victim to Big Inning in Gettysburg Setbacks

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College baseball team dropped both games of its home double-header against Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet fell 15-4 in the opener, before dropping a tightly-contested 6-5 loss in the finale.

Noah Potholm grinded through five solid innings in game one, before the Garnet staff ran into trouble in a decisive seven-run sixth inning. Aidan Sullivan went 3-for-5 in game one, mashing his fifth home run of the season.

Jackson Garnecki was outstanding through six innings, allowing just two runs with three strikeouts. However, the Bullets eventually got to the rookie in the seventh, hanging three runs to take control of the game. Noam AuYeung was 3-for-5 with two RBI in the second contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-  The Bullets rallied for a run in the first inning after loading the bases to open the frame. Potholm then bore down to strike out the final two batters and escape the jam with just one run allowed.

- The Garnet defense helped hold the Bullets scoreless in the third inning. Noam AuYeung made an outstanding diving grab in left for the first out of the frame. Swarthmore then turned a couple excellent plays in the infield to strand a couple baserunners.

- Zac Kahn smacked a one-out triple off the center field wall in the fourth, but was caught between bases on a grounder to third. The Bullets then took control of the game with a pair in the fifth and seven runs in the sixth inning, building a 10-0 cushion.

- Sullivan and Evan Hawkes both reached on one-out singles in the sixth, but were left stranded. The Garnet finally got to the Bullets' ace with four runs in the seventh. Alessandro Propper-Bowring doubled down the left-field line to plate the first run, while AuYeung and Francisco Mora both brought home a run with productive groundouts. Sullivan then capped off the big inning with a solo shot to right-center field, making it 10-4.

- The Bullets countered with five unearned runs in the eighth to build an 11-run advantage. Swarthmore threatened in the bottom half as they looked to prolong the contest, but fell to the mercy rule in eight frames.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-  Garnecki erased a couple leadoff baserunners with a double play, before exiting the first inning unscathed with an inning-ending groundout. The Garnet offense had traffic on the basepaths in the first and second, but were unable to bring a run across.

- Gettysburg took the lead with a solo homer in the third inning, but it was short lived after Kahn evened the score with an RBI triple - the first baseman's second of the series. The sophomore launched a blast to the deepest part of the ballpark, scoring Hawkes from first base. Sullivan got the rally started with a leadoff walk.

- Garnecki struck out a pair looking to wrap up a scoreless top of the fourth. The Garnet tallied a couple infield hits in the bottom half, but were held in check by the Bullets starter. Gettysburg then answered with a go-ahead run in the fifth, taking a 2-1 lead.

- Hawkes legged out an infield single to open the fifth, and then stole second base with one out. Deven Peterson then punched a blooper the other way to drive home the tying run, while AuYeung lined a go-ahead single to right. Garnecki responded in the sixth with a shutdown frame, ending the inning with his third punchout of the afternoon.

- Gettysburg rallied for three runs in the seventh after being held in check for most of the contest. Propper-Bowring countered with an RBI single in the bottom half after AuYeung reached on an infield single and then stole second.

- Gabe Elliott helped keep the Garnet in the game with a rare six-out performance. The senior coasted through his second inning to give his offense a chance.

- The Bullets doubled home a run to build a two-run cushion in the bottom of the ninth. The Garnet brought a run across with an AuYeung dribbler up the middle, but left runners stranded in scoring position to end the game.
