Sullivan Breaks Hit Record, Baseball Drops Series Opener to WAC

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College baseball team opened its series against Washington College with a 13-3 loss on Wednesday afternoon. The Garnet totaled seven hits and 11 walks, but struggled with runners in scoring position.

Aidan Sullivan headlined the afternoon for the Garnet, ripping a leadoff double off the centerfield wall in the first inning for his 201st career hit. With the milestone swing, the senior became the program's all-time hits leader, surpassing Charles Levitt's mark set in 2019. Sullivan now stands alone atop the record books for hits, runs, home runs, total bases, and walks.

Brad Johnston had a two-hit afternoon to pace the Garnet offense. Swarthmore scored two runs on hit batsmen and another on a bases-loaded walk. Deven Peterson brought home two of the runs, while Kahn helped plate the other.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-  The Garnet surrendered a run on a wild pitch in the first inning, but Ezra Schwartz beared down to strike out a pair to end the frame. Sullivan wasted no time in the bottom half, breaking the program hits record with a double off the centerfield wall. However, the Shoremen escaped the jam with an inning-ending double play, securing an early 1-0 advantage.

- Swarthmore threatened in the second inning, but left a pair stranded in scoring position. The Shoremen then increased their lead with a solo homer in the third inning, before rallying for a five-run fifth, which was aided by a three-run homer, making it 7-0.

- The Garnet cut into their deficit with two runs on a pair of bases-loaded, hit batsmen in the fifth frame. Swarthmore had a chance for a bigger inning, but grounded into an inning-ending double play for the second time this afternoon.

- Washington added on with three more runs in the sixth, building a 10-2 advantage. The Garnet threatened once again, loading the bases in the bottom half, but grounded into another inning-ending double play. They also loaded the bases in the seventh, but came away empty handed.

- Swarthmore loaded the bases for the fourth-straight inning, finally bringing a run across with a Peterson walk. However, the threat ended with a deep flyout to strand three more runners.
