CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Swarthmore College baseball team bounced back with an 18-13 victory at Washington College on Friday to split the season series with the Shoremen.
The Garnet outlasted Washington in a battle of the offenses, recording 15 hits on the day. Swarthmore got out to an 11-1 lead but the Shoremen tried to rally with 12 runs over the final three frames. However, the Garnet hitters responded with seven runs over the eighth and ninth innings to hold off the home team.
Zac Kahn led Swarthmore at the plate, going 3-for-6 with a double, a home run, five RBI, and two runs scored.
Deven Peterson also went 3-for-6 while driving in three and scoring once.
Evan Hawkes and
Francisco Mora also knocked in three runs apiece.
Aidan Sullivan,
Evan Hawkes, and
Alessandro Propper-Bowring joined Kahn in leaving the yard.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sullivan led off the game with his fourth homer of the year to give his squad a quick 1-0 lead. The Garnet created separation with a five-spot in the second. Peterson singled and stole second before Propper-Bowring drew a walk. After a sacrifice moved the runners up, Mora drove in both with a base hit. Sullivan then worked a walk to put two runners on for Kahn, who crushed a ball over the fence in right to make it 6-0.
- The Shoremen got on the board with a lead-off home run in the third but produced just two more baserunners through the fifth innings. Swarthmore then pulled away with another five-run frame in the sixth to go ahead 11-1. Propper-Bowring hit a long ball, Mora plated one with a single, and Hawkes launched a three-run shot for his first collegiate home run.
- Washington finally broke through for a big inning in the seventh. The Shoremen pushed four across on a pair of doubles and an error to get within six (11-5). However, the Garnet took the momentum right back with four runs in the eighth. Kahn added two more RBI on a single and Peterson smacked a two-run double.
- The home team continued to battle back in the bottom of the eighth, tallying five runs on a single, a three-run homer, and a sacrifice fly. Swarthmore shut down the rally attempt again with three insurance runs in the ninth.
Nathaniel Kittredge doubled in a pair and Peterson tacked on an RBI single. Washington went down fighting in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three times before the Garnet were able to end the contest.
