Box Score LANGHORNE, Pa. - Paced by a three-hit, four-RBI day from junior first baseman
Nicko Burnett, the Swarthmore College baseball team (8-5) battled to a 6-5 win over the Cairn Highlanders on Thursday.
In addition to Burnett's banner day, the Garnet offense also received a boost from senior right fielder Tim Kwilos, who recorded three hits and scored three runs, driving in two. Sophomore catcher Joe Rizzo and junior second baseman Cody Ruben earned two hits apiece.
The pitching was also stellar for much of the game, as a tandem of senior Sean Mangus (W) and freshman Joe Warren combined to no-hit the Highlanders for six innings.
The score was close throughout the early innings, as Swarthmore broke through with a single run in the third and another in the fifth. The Garnet men appeared to blow the game open in the seventh and eighth, scoring twice per frame to take a 6-0 lead, but a five-run Cairn ninth inning returned the game to nailbiter status. With the tying run at third base and the winning inning run at first, freshman pitcher Oscar Leong came on to record the final two outs and secure the victory.
Freshman Nathan Booth pitched two innings and posted two strikeouts, while fellow first-year Alex Chiang tossed a perfect eighth inning.
The Garnet gets back into action on Saturday, hosting Oneonta St. at Clothier Field in a doubleheader. The first game is set to begin at noon.
