Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Freshman Oscar Leong was impressive on the mound in his first collegiate start for the Swarthmore College baseball team (3-4), but the New Jersey City University Gothic Knights (6-4) rallied late to down the Garnet 8-3 in the third day of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
Leong fired five scoreless innings, allowing just five hits while striking out two in the effort. He left the game with a 3-0 lead after Nicko Burnett and Scoop Ruxin each knocked home a run in the bottom of the first inning, and Joe Rizzo added an RBI single of his own in the third.
Late in the game, though, the Gothic Knights would fight back, plating four runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. The Garnet would load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to bring anyone home, as New Jersey City reliever Delio Coutinho ultimately struck out the side to give his team the win.
For Swarthmore, Tim Kwilos, Rory McTear, Nicko Burnett, and John Lim each finished with multi-hit games, while Sophomore outfielder Zach Powell provided the defensive play of the day with a dazzling diving grab on a looping fly ball down the left field line.
The Garnet will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday when it takes on Juniata College in day four of the spring break slate.
