Men's Track & Field Posts Strong Showing on Final Day of Centennial Championships

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's track & field team capped its indoor season with the conclusion of the 2013 Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday from Ursinus College.

Senior Matthew Heck had the best individual finish on the day for the Garnet men, placing fourth overall in the 400 meter dash with a season-best time of 52.00.

Sophomore Jason Heo made the finals in the 60-meter hurdles with a program-record time of 9.15. In the finals, he placed seventh overall with a time of 9.22.

In the heptathlon, senior Eric Verhasslet collected a program-record 2897 points, highlighted by a second-place finish in the 1,000 meter run (2:55.32). Overall, Verhasslet placed 14th.

In the relays, the distance medley relay team senior Aidan DuMont-McCaffrey, sophomore Erick White, sophomore Jonas Oppenheimer and freshman Dan Creem had an excellent showing, crossing the finish line in a time of 10:40.47 to place fourth overall.

In the 4x800 relay, White, Oppenheimer, Creem and Paul Green paced the Garnet to a sixth-place finish  (8:12.99 3 1).

Sophomore Zach Kronstat and senior Travis Mattingly finished 8-9 in the triple jump, with Kronstat hitting 40-05.50 and Mattingly 40-00.00.

Erik Myers just missed a Top 10 finish in the 1 mile run (4:31.96 / 11th). Junior Richard Scott finished 15th in the 800 meter run (2:03.64).

In the 3000 meter run, junior Robert Fain placed ninth overall  (8:57.47).

As a team, the Garnet men finished in ninth place with 19 points. Johns Hopkins won the championship with 168 points.
