SWARTHMORE, Pa. –
Andrew Steele factored into three event victories and swam the fastest leg for the winning 200-yard freestyle relay to close out the afternoon to lift the Swarthmore College men's swimming team to a 109-96 dual meet triumph over Ursinus on Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Ware Pool. The Garnet were propelled by 11 season bests, which included the 200 freestyle relay, to outlast the Bears at home.
The meet would come down to the 200-yard freestyle, which was the final event of the afternoon, after the teams were neck-and-neck throughout the day. The Garnet clinged to a 98-90 advantage entering the event before registering a season-best time of 1:28.36 to clinch the dual meet win.
Max Krackow, Steele,
Samuel Tomlinson and
John Flaherty swam on the relay that held off the Bears by six one-hundredths of a second. With his team trailing in the early going, Steele put the Garnet ahead by posting a split time of 21.48 seconds in the second leg of the race.
Swarthmore set the tone early by opening the afternoon with a win in the 200-yard medley relay.

Stan Le, Steele and Tomlinson combined for a season-best time of 1:39.54.
Other notable performances were made by
Stephen Sekula, Le, Fitzstevens and Flaherty in individual events. Sekula won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events in season-best times of 49.72 and 1:48.12, respectively, while Le took the 100-yard breaststroke with a season-best mark of 1:01.89 and nearly three seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Fitzstevens won the 100-yard backstroke in 54.91, which was his fastest time of the winter, and Flaherty was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly in 54.46 while registering a season-best mark of 1:49.62 in the 200-yard freestyle.
Swarthmore (3-2, CC 2-1) will break for final exams and return to action on Saturday, Jan. 25 when it hosts Cabrini for a dual meet at 2 p.m.
