Men’s Soccer Falls on Late Goal to Franklin & Marshall in Regular Season Finale

Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. – Senior Noah Sterngold netted an equalizing tally late in regulation, but the Swarthmore College men's soccer team fell to Franklin & Marshall by a 2-1 score on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Tylus Field. Despite the loss, the Garnet will continue their season as the second seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference Tournament.

Trailing 1-0 in the waning minutes, Swarthmore was awarded a penalty kick following a Diplomat foul inside the Garnet 18-yard box. Sterngold fired a laser that was saved by a diving T.J. White, but the midfielder controlled his own miss and tied the score with a blast to the left corner of the net with just 5:37 on the clock.

Franklin & Marshall (12-3-2, CC 5-3-1), however, earned a penalty shot of its own in the 88th minute and had Ben Beaver come through by netting the go-ahead goal. It was the senior's 12th goal of the season.

In the first half, the Diplomats were able to open the scoring in the 17th minute. Devon Malfitano collected a loose ball after a throw-in and fired a shot past Garnet goalkeeper Peter Maxted. Swarthmore appeared to score its first goal of the match with 10 minutes remaining in the frame, but a header by senior Jack Momeyer was cleared away at the last moment by a Diplomat defender to keep the hosts ahead at the break.

Maxted of Swarthmore made four saves on eight chances between the pipes in the losing effort, while F&M's White turned away five of the 14 shots he faced to pick up the victory.

Swarthmore (9-4-4, CC 5-2-2) will have a chance to avenge the loss when it plays Franklin & Marshall again in the semifinal round of the Centennial Conference Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 9 at a time to be determined. Both semifinals as well as the championship match of the annual postseason event will be hosted by top-seeded Haverford.
