Garnet Concludes Season Against Ursinus; Senior Class Honored

Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. - In conclusion of the 2013 campaign, the Swarthmore College field hockey squad honored its four graduating seniors prior to the game with Centennial Conference foe Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon.

The senior class is made up of goalkeeper Gabby Capone, forward Nia Jones, midfielder Aarti Rao and defender Anne Rosenblatt. Each were joined by family members and praised for their hard work and dedication to the field hockey program and College community.

Ursinus (12-5, 8-2 CC) secured second place in the upcoming conference playoffs with a 6-2 victory over the Garnet (2-16, 0-10). The Bears tallied three goals in each half en route to the road win.

The opening tally came at 8:00 after Ursinus' Megan Keenan sent a laser past the defense for her 20th of the season. In the 19th and 20th minutes the Bears' attack was shut down five times by Garnet's Capone - including three back-to-back saves in 20 seconds from the senior keeper. However, Ursinus converted twice more later in the half for a 3-0 advantage heading into the break.

Ursinus was quick to the attack once again and rattled off two goals five minutes into the second for a 5-0 lead. To this point, Swarthmore just had one shot, but in the 44th minute junior Abigail Lauder tipped in a deep lob shot from Rao - a play that began as Lauder's corner input - for her third goal of the season.

The Bears netted its final goal of the game off a penalty stroke opportunity in the 47th minute. After that point, Ursinus earned just one shot on goal and the Garnet defense blocked away four shots.

The Garnet found some momentum and rattled off back-to-back shots in the 54th minute - from Rosenblatt and sophomore Erin Gluck - but both were denied. At 65:06 sophomore Julia Thomas tossed in a shot from the goal line, finding Jones' stick for the senior's 38th career goal.

Capone finished with a season-high 14 saves between the pipes, while her counterpart Danielle DeSpirito made five stops - all in the second half.

Jones and Rao will leave their mark on the program record books as each have a spot on the current top-ten lists. Finishing with 38 career goals and 12 assists, Jones jumps to sixth place for both career goals and career points. Rao earned 18 career assists to put her in sixth place as well.
