Danielle Sullivan eclipsed the 1,000-kill mark in Swarthmore College's 3-1 victory over Wilkes University (18-15) on Saturday afternoon in the ECAC Southeast consolation match. In the semifinal match, the Garnet fell to Lebanon Valley College in straight sets (18-25, 23-15, 21-25).
Sullivan - entering the day needing 16 kills to reach the plateau - swung 33 kills in the two matches. Concluding her career with 1,017 she becomes the fifth player in program history to hit the benchmark. Additionally, she's the fifth player in the program to tally over 1,000 digs and kills - she reached 1,000 digs earlier this season.
Swarthmore (17-14) concluded its 2013 campaign with a victory - the first time since the 2003-04 season - by set scores 27-29, 25-21, 25-17, 25-13. The victory is also against the same opponent the Garnet defeated to open this season.
In the match with Wilkes, four Garnet players earned double-digit digs to hold the defense - senior
Maggie Duszyk led with a career-high 23. On the front line, Swarthmore combined for 18 block assists - Sullivan earned a career-high six,
Chastity Hopkins '15 earned five and
Sam DuBois had four.
On attack, Sullivan picked up 19 kills for the Garnet and senior
Brone Lobichusky swung 17 and had three service aces. DuBois set 47 points for the Garnet.
Preceding the victory, Swarthmore lost in three sets to Lebanon Valley (30-7) - the Dutchwomen went on to win the ECAC Division III Southeast Championship in a three set defeat over Neumann.
Against the Dutchwomen, sophomore libero
Madison Heppe anchored the defense with 16 digs, while Duszyk registered 13. On attack, Sullivan and Lobichusky combined for 24 kills in the effort. DuBois finished with 31 assists, six digs and block assists in the three setter.
