Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Junior
Michael Stewart and freshman
Billy Evers each found the back of the net to lift the Swarthmore College men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Penn State Abington in an ECAC quarterfinal match on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at Clothier Field. With the victory, the top-seeded Garnet earned hosting rights for the remainder of the tournament.
Returning to the friendly confines of Clothier Stadium after three weeks on the road, Swarthmore (10-5-4) controlled play from the opening kickoff. The hosts sent a barrage of shots at senior goalkeeper Dan Saint-Pol, beginning with a
Michael Stewart strike that hit the post just 36 seconds into the match. Saint-Pol also kept the Garnet off the scoreboard early by making a diving save from point-blank range on a shot that came off the foot of senior
Jack Momeyer in the 10th minute of action. The teams went into halftime scoreless with the hosts holding a commanding 12-3 advantage in total shots.
The Garnet finally broke through with the only goal they needed just 53 seconds into the second half. Senior defender
Geli Carabases charged down the left side and sent a dangerous cross inside the box. Saint-Pol missed an attempt to intercept the pass, and
Michael Stewart took advantage of the mistake and scored on the open net.
After junior
Geoff Stewart nearly added to the lead on a shot that went in and out of the hands of Saint-Pol, Evers was able to double Swarthmore's advantage in the 73rd minute. His attempt on a breakaway squeaked by Saint-Pol, tricking between his ribcage and left arm and rolling into the net for the rookie's second career goal. Sophomore midfielder
David Geschwind, who fed the through-ball to Evers, was credited with an assist on the play that sealed the final outcome.
Senior
Peter Maxted and freshman
David Selverian, who was making his collegiate debut, combined for the shutout without having to make a save for Swarthmore. The Garnet had a 26-5 advantage in total shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks over the Nittany Lions. Saint-Pol of Penn State Abington (10-5-3) turned away five of the 26 shots he faced in the losing effort.
Swarthmore will continue the postseason when it hosts seventh-seeded Muhlenberg in the second of two semifinal matches on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.
