SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to local rival Widener University on Wednesday.
The Pride tallied the game's lone goal in the 69
th minute. The Garnet outshot their opponent, 10-7, and had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks but were unable to solve the Widener goalkeeper.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams struggled to generate offense in the opening half, recording just one shot each. The Pride nearly missed on a header in front that went just wide of the left post.
Noah Daniel had a clear chance straight-on from outside the box but it sailed high.
- The two sides combined for nine shots in the first 20 minutes of the second half as they looked to break through. Widener earned a quality opportunity in the 69
th minute, drawing a foul just outside the box. The Pride blasted the free kick directly into the right side of the net to take a 1-0 lead.
- Swarthmore put a pair of shots on goal down the stretch but could not net the equalizer.
