ASTON, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's soccer team lost its season opener to Neumann University, 1-0, on Tuesday night. The teams waited through a two-hour, halftime lightening delay before the Knights netted the game's lone score in the 47th minute.
Eli Cogan made a pair of saves in his third career start, including a remarkable diving stop on a first-half penalty kick. The Garnet outshot the Knights 12-7, but were turned away on all four of their shots on goal.
Javier Minuesa Sicilia led the Garnet with a team-high four shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet outshot the Knights 7-3 in the opening half, but were unable to register a shot on goal. Cogan kept the home team off the board with a flurry of saves in the 39
th minute. The Swarthmore keeper made a save on the Knights first attempt before making a diving stop on an ensuing penalty kick.
- Following a two-hour lighting delay, Neumann put themselves in front with a goal in the 47
th minute. The Garnet countered with a
Mason Jelovsek shot on goal in the following minute, but were turned away by the Knights keeper.
- The Garnet turned up the pressure with another shot on goal by Minuesa Sicilia in the 48th minute, while
Shlok Kaul put an attempt on net in the 60th minute.
- Swarthmore outshot Neumann 5-4 in the final half, but were unable find an equalizer.
Kouta Ishibashi had one final attempt at the Knights keeper in the 80th minute, but was denied by the netminder's fourth and final save of the night.
