CHESTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore College volleyball squad split Saturday afternoon with a win over Route 320 foe Widener University by a 3-1 score and fought Neumann University to five sets to fall 3-2 in non-conference action. The tri-match was also host to Widener's Breast Cancer Awareness event.
In the opening match of the day, Swarthmore (12-10) took sets two and four from Neumann (17-10), but fell in five sets (14-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 12-15). In the 320 Challenge matchup, the Garnet defeated Widener (14-14) in four sets (25-15, 23-25, 25-19, 25-15) to even the fall score at 2-2.
Sophomore Madison Heppe anchored the defense with a combined 49 digs, while senior Danielle Sullivan and sophomore Anastasia White-Torruellas earned 38 and 22, respectively.
The front line earned a season-high 12 blocks against the Pride - junior Chastity Hopkins notched a career-best seven blocks, including one solo. Senior Brone Lobichusky tied her season-high with five block assists and White-Torruellas finished with three assists in the match.
On the attack, Lobichusky and Sullivan lead the way in both matches. Lobichusky swung 12 against the Pride and 14 at the Knights, while Sullivan totaled 15 and 14, respectively, adding two more double-doubles to her season total of nine. Sophomore setter Sam DuBois finished with 80 assists on the day along with 22 digs, five kills, one solo block, four block assists and two service aces.
Swarthmore will return to Centennial Conference action on Tuesday, October 22 hosting Bryn Mawr for senior day. The Garnet will honor graduating seniors Sullivan, Lobichusky and Maggie Duszyk.
