Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College volleyball team needed just three sets to sweep No. 10 Eastern University (3-2) on Friday night at the Tarble Pavilion. With the victory, the Garnet captured its first victory over a nationally-ranked opponent and became just the second Centennial Conference team to defeat a top-10 team.
The first set extended to extra points as Swarthmore (4-1) prevailed 29-27. Sets two and three were close as well, but thanks to the electrifying crowd at the Tarble Pavilion and on-target play, the Garnet took set two, 25-22 and the final set, 25-23.
Kat Montemurro led the Garnet with a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs, Allison Coleman handed out 35 assists and the front line totaled nine blocks.
Trailing 2-0 to begin the first set of the night, Swarthmore put its first point up with a kill from Chastity Hopkins. The Eagles and Garnet went point-for-point for a while until a block assist from Brone Lobichusky and Allie Coleman fueled a Swarthmore run. The duo produced three more block assists later in the set to extend the Garnet lead to 19-13. The Eagles began its comeback with a 5-0 run to knot the score at 25 all. The set was closed out with a kill from Montemurro for the 29-27 set win. Lobinchusky and Danielle Sullivan each tallied four kills.
The second set began much like the first as both teams traded points for a 7-7 tie to start. Beginning with a service error on Eastern, the Garnet hit a 3-0 run with a service ace from Lobichusky and back-to-back kills from Montemurro leading to a visitor timeout. With a refocused team, the Eagles climbed back and eventually tying the set at 13; continuing to a 17-13 lead on a 7-0 run. Swarthmore regained strength with kills from Sullivan, Danielle Delpeche and Lobinchusky for another tied set at 20. The Eagles proceeded with two straight attack errors followed by a kill from Montemurro before calling timeout as the Garnet led 22-20. Trading the final points, Sullivan sealed up the second set win with a kill and assist from freshman libero Madison Heppe.
It was a different story to begin the final set, as Swarthmore exploded with a 9-0 run that included two kills from Zahra Ahmed and a block assist from Chastity Hopkins and Ahmed. The Garnet never lost the lead in the third set and the game-winning point came off a kill from Lobichusky. Ahmed and Montemurro each had four kills, while Heppe collected seven digs. Lobichusky and Montemurro each collected service aces in the final set.
Swarthmore will return to action next weekend at the Stevens Duck Classic at Stevens Institute of Technology with matches against York, Kean, FDU-Florham and the host. Play is slated to begin Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
