Men's Tennis Competes at Saint Joseph's and Tim Berman Invitationals

PHILADELPHIA - The Swarthmore College men's tennis team continued its fall season over the weekend with the Saint Joseph's Invitational and the Tim Berman Invitational from the College.

At Saint Joseph's, junior Christian Carcione and sophomore Irving Stone competed against high-level Division I competition from around the Mid-Atlantic. Stone finished 1-2 in singles action, reaching the Flight 2 consolation semifinals. Stone dropped his first match to Saint Joseph's Max Montague 6-3, 6-0, but quickly rebounded for a consolation victory over Drexel's Jeganathan Srinivasan (6-3, 7-5). In the consolation semifinals, Stone dropped a three-set heartbreaker to La Salle's Joe Labate (6-1, 1-6, 10-8). Carcione won his opening match of the Flight 3 singles bracket, downing Drexel's Danny Talone 6-3, 6-3. Carcione was eliminated from contention in the next round by Delaware's Evan Andrews (6-2, 7-5).

From the College, seniors Malik Mubeen and James Wieler each had an exceptional weekend against competition from Villanova and Lafayette. The pair claimed the Tim Berman doubles championship, first defeating Villanova's duo of Grandlin/Cua 9-8 and later Lafayette's Pinkard/Lazer 8-5 for the title. In singles play, both Wieler and Mubeen finished Saturday's opening round unbeaten. Mubeen defeated Villanova's Joseph Monaldo 6-1, 6-0 and Lafayette's Brian Stefanowicz 6-0, 6-1. Wieler topped Lafayette's Brian Pinkard in three sets (4-6, 7-6, 10-8) and Villanova's Kyle Grandli 6-4, 6-3. Both Wieler (6-3, 5-7, 10-4) and Mubeen (6-2, 6-2) dropped their final singles matches on Sunday.
