Men's Tennis Opens 2012 With Centennial and Villanova Invites

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Members of the Swarthmore College men's tennis team competed in both the Villanova Invitational and the Centennial Conference Invitational, held at the College, over the weekend. At Swarthmore, freshman Matt Hirsh won his singles flight, while at Villanova, junior Preston Poon and freshman William Lennon captured multiple victories for the Garnet.

On the first day of play at Villanova, Poon and Lennon paired up to earn a tight 9-7 win over Chestnut Hill's Ceniceros/Atri. In singles competition, Poon defeated Ceniceros, 6-2, 6-0, and Lennon won against Atri, 6-4, 6-2.

Poon and Lennon found themselves in another tight doubles match on Saturday, but fell 9-7 to Franklin and Marshall's Silverburg/MacAurthur. Lennon rebounded for a marathon 7-5, 5-7, 10-8 win over MacAurthur in singles.

Home at Swarthmore, senior Malik Mubeen won both of his singles matches on Saturday, defeating Muhlenberg's Blumenthal and Franklin and Marshall's Tomioko, but the scores of 7-5, 6-1 and 7-5, 6-3, respectively. Mubeen later paired with Hirsh in doubles. The men defeated Tomioko/Lertdumrikarn from Franklin and Marshall by a score of 8-2, before falling to Ursinus' Stutchin/Hope, 8-3.

Hirsh won all four of his singles matches over the weekend, capturing the Flight B singles title. He defeated Matt Hope from Ursinus, 6-3, 6-2, Langsdale from McDaniel, 6-0, 6-0, and Franco Mena from Dickinson, 6-3, 6-1, en route to the finals, where he earned a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Dickinson's Brittan.

Next weekend the Garnet will compete in the Tim Berman Memorial Tournament at Swarthmore and the St. Joseph's University Invitational.
