LANCASTER, Pa. - Freshman Wyatt McCall picked the perfect time to net the first goal of his collegiate career, as the first-year's tally in the 64th minute helped the Swarthmore College men's soccer team (5-0-0, 1-0-0) defeat No. 5 Franklin & Marshall 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in the Centennial Conference opener for both squads.

Sophomore Michael Stewart also scored for Swarthmore, which rallied from an early 1-0 second-half deficit to pull off the road upset of the Diplomats (5-1-0, 0-1-0).

With the upset win, the Garnet men's soccer program continues its mastery of nationally-ranked opponents. Swarthmore has now won its last five matches against nationally-ranked opponents and 10 of its last 11 matches dating back to 2007.

The Garnet fell behind 1-0 early in the second half when F & M's Sam Lane put the home side on top with his diving header goal in the 49th minute of play. The deficit would be short-lived, however, as Stewart answered less than four minutes later with his team-leading fourth goal of the season, leveling the score at 1-1.

Now with all of the momentum on its side, the Garnet pulled ahead for good just 11 minutes later,  getting the game-winner from an unlikely source.  McCall - who had yet to record a shot on the season until today - dribbled down the left flank, fired a low shot towards the far post that found the back of the net, putting Swat ahead 2-1.

With the lead, the Garnet relied on its defense over the final 25 minutes to secure the upset victory. Needing a goal to tie, the Dips potent offense could only manage just one shot over the game's final 25 minutes, a 77th minute header from Chris Scott that sailed north of the crossbar.

Junior Peter Maxted, the reigning Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week, made one save in goal for the Garnet.

After two weeks on the road, the Garnet return to Clothier Field on Wednesday to face Stevens. Action is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
