Volleyball Coasts Into ECAC Semifinals With 3-0 Win Over The Aggies

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – No. 3 Swarthmore College (20-6) volleyball shut down No. 6 Delaware Valley College (17-10) in straight sets during the ECAC Division III South Region volleyball quarterfinal match at Tarble Pavilion Wednesday evening.

The Garnet recorded set victories of 25-20, 25-12, and 25-18 to reach 20 wins for the third consecutive season. Controlling the momentum in the match, Swarthmore finished with a team hitting percentage of .317, including committing just two errors in the final two sets.

Swarthmore's front line was hard at work as the team collected a combined 10 blocks. Zahra Ahmed registered seven block assists, while Chastity Hopkins added five of her own. Freshman Maggie Duszyk made one solo block and two block assists in the winning effort.

Controlling the defense for the Garnet was freshman libero Madison Heppe with 11 digs along with teammates Danielle Sullivan and Kate Amodei with 10 digs each.

Along with a strong effort on the front line, Ahmed also led the Garnet offense with 10 kills on the night. Junior Brone Lobichusky collected nine kills on 15 attempts, committing just one error, for a match-high .533 hitting percentage. Kat Montemurro and Sullivan each added seven kills for Swarthmore. Allie Coleman managed 30 assists in the three-set defeat over the Aggies.

Leading Delaware Valley was Janel Gluch with 11 kills, while Crystal Ronan collected 28 assists. On the Aggies defense, Destinee Horning had 10 digs and three players tallied eight digs a piece.

No. 3 Swarthmore will travel to West Virginia for the ECAC semifinals and final played at host, No. 1 Bethany College. The Garnet will face Landmark Conference rival No. 2 Moravian College in the semifinal match at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 10th.

The other semifinal match features No. 1 Bethany and No. 4 Cabrini, which will be played at 11:00 a.m. The winners of both semifinal matches will compete for the title at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
