BALTIMORE - The No. 12/14 Swarthmore College men's soccer team (11-1-2, 6-0-1 CC) defeated rival Johns Hopkins (5-7-2, 3-3-1 CC) in comeback fashion, scoring three goals in the final 16 minutes of play to earn a 3-1 win on Saturday evening from Homewood Field.

After a scoreless first half, the Blue Jays scored first on their home field when senior Brandon Sumpio found the back of the net in the 46th minute. The Garnet then scored three times to solidify the victory.

The first goal was notched in the 74th by freshman David Geschwind, who headed in a long throw from junior Jake Weiner. The scored remained tied 1-1, until the 88th minute when senior John Pontillo volleyed a corner, played by sophomore Geoff Stewart. Sophomore Michael Stewart added the final score for the Garnet when he chipped the keeper in the 90th minute. His team-leading 10th goal was assisted by freshman Alec McClean.

The hard fought conference match included 33 foul calls and one yellow card. The Blue Jays outshot the Garnet 14-13 in the match, but the Garnet controlled the second half, firing 10 shots to the Blue Jays' six.

The stingy Garnet defense helped prevent the upset, including junior goalkeeper Peter Maxted, who had five stops in the scoreless first half, totaling six for the match. The Garnet have not lost in eight matches, retaining the first place ranking in the Centennial Conference standings.

The Garnet will continue its conference slate at Washington College on Wednesday, October 24th. The game is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
