No. 15 Men's Soccer Battles No. 22 Scranton to 1-1 Draw

Box Score

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Sophomore Michael Stewart's team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 62nd minute helped give the No. 15 Swarthmore College men's soccer team (8-1-2) a well-deserved 1-1 draw with No. 22 Scranton on Wednesday evening from Clothier Field Stadium.

Junior Jack Momeyer - who played an excellent all-around match - set up the game-tying score when he dribbled by two Royals' defenders and passed off to an open Stewart on the left wing, who proceeded to bury a shot from 10-yards out.

The unbeaten Royals (9-0-2) took the early advantage when Patrick Daly headed home the first goal of his four-year career in the 29th minute.

The much-anticipated non-conference match-up between two of the Mid-Atlantic region's top teams was a tale of two halves, as the Royals completely dominated the first half while the Garnet rallied to control the second stanza.

The first half was all Scranton, as the Royals controlled possession throughout and had plenty of scoring chances . After firing three shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes, the Royals finally broke through in the 29th minute. Tom O'Donnell corralled the ball after a short corner and launched a perfect cross into the area, where Daly was able to soar over the defense and head home the goal to put the Royals up 1-0.

It was a 180 degree change in energy and performance for the Garnet in the second half, as Swarthmore handily out-played the Royals for the second 45 minutes.

The Garnet maintained possession for the majority of the second half and was finally able to push forward and put pressure on the Scranton defense. Momeyer had the first real scoring chance of the second half, as his point blank chance from the center of the box in the 60th minute was saved by Dillion.

Momeyer was back at it again just two minutes later, but this time after weaving through the Royals' defense, he passed off to an open Stewart, who scored to level the score at 1-1 in the 62nd minute.

The Garnet offense would manage five more shots in the second half - including a nice strike from distance on goal from junior Jake Weiner - but the match would remain tied through the end of regulation. In overtime, neither side was really able to threaten, as the evenly-played match finished in a 1-1 draw.

Stewart has now scored in three consecutive matches and in eight of Swarthmore's 11 matches this season.

Swarthmore finished with slight 13-12 edge in shots and shots on goal (5-4), while the two teams finished even in corner kicks (3).

Both Garnet goalie Peter Maxted and Scranton 'keeper James Dillion finished with three saves for the match.

Swarthmore returns to Centennial Conference play on Saturday when it hosts Ursinus. Play is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
