Cultural Well-being

An awareness of our own cultural background, as well as the diversity and richness present in other backgrounds. Cultural wellness implies understanding, awareness and intrinsic respect for aspects of diversity.


 

Campus Resources for Cultural Wellness

  • Black Cultural Center The BCC is a great place to explore and debate ideas, hold study groups, plan and host meetings and events, have a dinner, read a book, write a paper, or just relax. We invite you to explore our website to learn more about our energetic community.
  • Intercultural Center The Intercultural Center (IC) provides programs and services that support the personal and intellectual development of Asian American, LatinX, Multiracial, Native American, Queer (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender), low-income, international, and first-generation college students at Swarthmore College.
  • Lang Center for Civic Engagement 
  • Latin American and Latino Studies: Swarthmore's Latin American and Latino Studies Program introduces students to the shared history and the rich diversity of Latin American societies, cultures and nation-states, as well as with the transnational dynamics that shape Latino, Latina and Latinx experiences in the United States.

Examples of Activities that Improve Cultural Wellness

  • Take a course on a culture you are unfamiliar with
  • Visit a new part of campus, the Borough, or Philadelphia
  • Ask a teammate to take you to cultural event on campus that they are involved with
  • Try a restaurant from a different culture
  • Shop at an ethnic grocery store
  • Attend events to learn about different cultures/backgrounds
  • Visit a multicultural center
