FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Swarthmore College men's tennis team continued play at the ITA Regional Tournament on Saturday at the University of Mary Washington.
Michael Melnikov advanced to tomorrow's championship singles finale with a pair of victories on the afternoon. The senior will square off against top-seeded Carnegie Mellon in tomorrow's finale. Max Lindstrom won his opening match to advance to the semifinals of championship singles, but fell short of meeting his teammate in the finals.
The Garnet showed off its depth throughout all the singles draws. Nikola Galov won the B1 singles finals, Seth Sadikov was victorious in B2 singles and Winston Zhang won his draw in B3 singles. Lalith Suresh also outlasted the field in the championship singles consolation finals, picking up another win for the Garnet.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lindstrom and Melnikov both advanced to the semifinals with victories in the quarterfinals of championship singles. Lindstrom defeated his challenger from Carnegie Mellon, 7-5, 7-5, while Melnikov overcame his opponent from Johns Hopkins, 6-3, 6-2. Melnikov went on to topple his Hopkins challenger with a 6-3, 7-5 decision to advance to tomorrow's finale against the top-seeded player from Carnegie Mellon.
- Galov advanced to the B1 singles final with a 6-3, 0-6 [10-3] decision over Johns Hopkins. He went on to win the draw with a 3-6, 6-3 [10-8] win over Christopher Newport.
- Aamish Pal and Sadikov both met in the finals of B2 singles. Pal won his semifinals matchup over Johns Hopkins, 6-0, 6-2, while Sadikov overcame Christopher Newport, 6-4, 6-3. Sadikov got the better of his teammate in an entertaining B2 singles finale. The sophomore came out on top against his teammate with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
- Zhang was victorious in the semifinals of B3 singles with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Johns Hopkins. He proceeded to win the draw against Washington & Lee, 6-3, 6-4.
- Suresh won his semifinals matchup in the consolation bracket of championship singles. The senior bested Randolph-Macon, 8-0, and then held on for a 8-6 win over Haverford in the consolation finals.
- Kai Chen/ Andres Fente lost in the quarterfinals of championship doubles. The Swarthmore pair fell to Johns Hopkins, 8-2.
- Pal/ Zhang won in the quarterfinals of the doubles consolation bracket. The Garnet defeated Salisbury, 8-3.
ST. JOSEPH'S INVITATIONAL
- Fate MacAlasdair and
Cameron Samek both continued play at Saint Joseph's University. MacAlasdair defeated Villanova, 6-4, 6-4 in the grey quarterfinals, but fell to Temple, 6-3, 6-3 in the following round. The Swarthmore duo then lost a tight battle against Villanova, 7-6 [8-6] in the doubles quarterfinals.
