Hines Earns Gold to Headline Centennial Championship Opener

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's track & field team earned two medals on the opening day of the Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday. The men currently sit in sixth overall with 20 points.

Gabe Hines headlined the afternoon with a gold medal and program record in the pole vault. The sophomore brought the entire complex to a slow clap with a top mark of 4.60m (15-01.00) to win the event. The sophomore also posted the 10th fastest time in the 60m dash prelims with a 7.25 mark.

The men also grabbed a silver medal in the distance medley relay. The team of Colin DeLaney, Matthew Gutow, Kenneth Relovsky and Aiden Tomov continued the program's success in the event with a runner-up finish.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hines ended the meet on a high note by earning the team's first gold medal of the championships. The sophomore passed his opening four marks on the first attempt - including the 4.47m mark to clinch first overall. Hines then cleared the bar at 4.60m on his third attempt, which garnered the attention of the entire athletic complex. Hines placed third in the pole vault at last season's outdoor championships, but did not compete at the event at last season's indoor meet.

- The Distance medley relay of DeLaney, Gutow, Relovsky and Tomov finished second overall with a time of 10:21.36. The Garnet were narrowly beaten out by Johns Hopkins on the final lap after leading for the majority of the race.

- Hines posted a top-10 effort in the 60m dash prelims with a time of 7.25. The sophomore missed out on qualifying for the finals by only two spots.

- Sam Brody led the Garnet in the 5000m run with a time of 15:27.48. He was followed by Spencer Etheridge (15:36.06) and Harrison Kim (15:49.72), who finished with a pair of personal records in 15th and 18th, respectively.
