Cantine Leads Men’s Cross Country at NCAA Championships

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Aidan Cantine, Atticus Hempel and Will Sheehybattled through below freezing temperatures and snowy terrain as they represented Swarthmore at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships on Saturday.
 

In his second-career national championship appearance, Cantine recorded the second-highest male finish in program history as he crossed the finish in the 44th position. The senior missed out on All-American status by just four spots and recorded the fourth-highest finish among Centennial Conference competitors. 

After sitting in 83rd place at the mile two marker, Cantine picked up the pace as he gained ten positions by the 6.3k marker. The senior passed eight more competitors by the 7k mark,  before making 21 passes in the final 1k stretch. Cantine crossed the finish line at 25:41.9 for a 5:10.2 mile pace. 

Sheehy capped off a sensational rookie campaign with a 167th place effort. The freshman finished second on the team in his championship debut with a time of 26:27.3. The Los Angeles native battled through the elements and made several late passes to gain key positions late in the race. Sheehy made 17 passes between the 6.3k and 7k markers. 

Hempel made his second-straight NCAA Championship appearance after competing last season as a freshman. The sophomore finished 185th overall to crack the top-200 for the first time after he finished 236th overall in last season's championship debut. Hempel finished just behind Sheehy with a time of 26:32.5.
