SHERRILL, N.Y.—Swarthmore College Baseball outfielder Josh Bein, currently playing summer ball with the Sherrill Silversmiths in the New York Collegiate Baseball League, was recognized by the city of Sherrill, N.Y., for helping put out a house fire near the team's field on Monday.
Bein and two other teammate noticed flames spreading from the home's garage and rushed over, quickly grabbing a garden hose and helping suppress the flames from the now engulfed garage. Bein and his teammates fought the fire until the local volunteer fire department arrived to fully subdue the fire.
The Sherrill-Kenwood fire chief Andrew Bennett said, "The selfless efforts of these individuals to actively take action and attempt to assist the residents of Sherrill in a time of crisis is greatly appreciated."
Sherrill police chief Robert Drake added, "Their willingness to help and (their) courageous actions are a true inspiration."
Swarthmore College Baseball head coach Matt Midkiff was not surprised that Bein respond to this call to action. "I am very proud of Josh, and the other young men for their selfless response to this emergency," he said. "Josh is an amazing person with a great work ethic and passion to be the best. He carries that with a humble attitude and presence and gives great care to others. What a great example of what a Swarthmore Baseball player is and should be."
Later on the day of the fire, Bein and the Silversmiths played their first game of the summer season. Bein recorded a base hit and scored a run.
