COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.–The Swarthmore College men's track and field team achieved its best finish at the Centennial Conference Indoor Championships in 20 years as the Garnet placed third on Sunday, Feb. 26.
Swarthmore previously came in second at the 1997 championships with a total of 88 points. This year's squad was close behind that mark with 87 as they finished behind Haverford and Johns Hopkins.
Daniel Belkin and
Benjamin Hejna continued their success in the jump events to score major points for the Garnet. Hejna achieved a personal best in the high jump as he claimed gold with a 1.86m mark, just ahead of Belkin's runner-up height of 1.81m. In the long jump, Belkin earned bronze (6.27m) while Hejna earned points as the fifth-place finisher (6.16m).
Swarthmore also added to its point total with a host of bronze medal performances. Ben Warren placed third in the 800-meter run (1:57.32),
John Gagnon finished third in the 3k race (8:36.00) and
Robert Eppley did the same in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.19, a new personal best and the second-fastest mark in program history. The 4x400 relay team of Warren,
Zain Hannan,
Saadiq Garba and Belkin also crossed the line third in 3:30.34.
In the shot put,
Jared Hunt achieved the fourth-best throw in program history and reached a new PR with his distance of 14.58m, good for fourth place.
Andrew Jansen finished just behind in fifth with a throw of 14.43m.
The team begins the outdoor portion of its schedule on Friday, March 31 at the Danny Curran Invitational hosted by Widener University.
