BALTIMORE–In a semifinal match of the Centennial Conference tournament, the Swarthmore College women's tennis team (9-7) sought to avenge a regular season loss to Washington College. The Garnet ultimately fell by a score of 5-1 to complete their 2016 spring campaign.
The Shorewomen swept doubles play to jump to a 3-0 lead. The match at the no. 2 position saw Washington's Rachel Martinez and Julia Lazer mount a comeback from 3-6 to take the team point over sophomore

Maria Cuervo were narrowly edged in a tiebreak, 9-8(4) by April Weaver and Marielle McIntyre.
In singles action, sophomore
Rachel Bronkema recorded Swarthmore's first and lone point. At no. 5, she defeated MP Hubert in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Washington returned to take no. 3, as Martinez notched her second victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win over freshman
Arya Jemal. While Scheibmeir's contest at the no. 4 position featured a close first set, which she dropped 7-5, the second was lost 6-0 to Krista Filiopoulos. The Shorewomen ended the match by clinching the fifth team point and will face either Johns Hopkins or Dickinson on
Sunday, May 8.
Swarthmore graduates one senior and is slated to return 12 letterwinners next season.
