SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's tennis team has announced the hiring of Frederika Tavani as its first full-time assistant coach in program history, serving as the associate head women's tennis coach. Tavani brings a wealth of experience to the Garnet, who enter the season as two-time defending Centennial Conference champions. 

Tavani spent the past couple seasons as the head men's and women's tennis coach at Ursinus College. She made history with the Bears, leading the men's program to its first ever ITA national ranking, while also taking a leap forward with the women's team.


"Frederika's resume and experience reflects a wealth of knowledge as a coach and player," said head coach Jeremy Loomis. "Her impressive record as a Centennial Conference head coach as well as at the Division-I level will make an immediate positive impact on the program. We are thrilled to have her leadership and expertise on our courts."

While at Ursinus, Tavani most recently guided the men's team to a 10-8 record in 2026, marking the program's second consecutive winning season under her leadership. She also posted a 7-11 record with the women's team after leading the squad to a winning season the previous year.

Before joining the Bears, Tavani was promoted to Associate Head Women's Tennis Coach at Temple University in August 2023 after serving as an assistant coach for the women's program during the 2023 season. She previously spent more than a decade as an assistant coach for both the Owls' men's and women's teams, beginning in 2009.

During her time at Temple, Tavani played a key role in the success of the women's program, helping guide the Owls to NCAA Tournament appearances in each of her last two seasons. She also helped make program history by coaching a doubles team to the ITA Super Regional Championship, earning a berth in the ITA Fall National Championships.

Tavani started her collegiate coaching career at Ball State University, where she served as an assistant coach between 2006-08. 

A four-year letterwinner at Western Michigan, Tavani enjoyed one of the most decorated careers in program history. She was named the 2003 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, becoming the first Bronco to earn the honor since the award was established in 1998. Tavani also garnered MAC Newcomer of the Year recognition in 2001 and helped lead Western Michigan to a conference championship. Throughout her collegiate career, she earned both regional and national rankings, climbing as high as No. 62 nationally.

Tavani capped her collegiate career by capturing the singles title at the 2003 ITA National Summer Championships while also finishing as the doubles runner-up. That same year, she earned a spot in the Riviera All-American Championships.

Before coming to the United States, Tavani was Indonesia's top-ranked junior player on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) circuit, climbing as high as No. 138 in the world and earning a berth in the Australian Open Junior Championships. She continued her success on the professional stage, reaching a career-high national ranking of No. 4 in Indonesia while competing internationally on the ITF Women's Circuit.

In 2008, Tavani captured the USTA Gold Ball by winning the women's doubles title at the USTA National Championships in Flushing, New York.

The Garnet open their quest for another Centennial Conference title this fall before competing in the majority of their 2027 schedule during the spring season.
