BOX SCOREHUMACAO, PUERTO RICO-In a match that featured three tiebreaks, the Swarthmore College women's tennis team (0-2) narrowly dropped a 5-4 decision against Division II Minnesota State University-Mankato in its spring break campaign opener on Sunday, March 6.
Swarthmore was down 1-2 after doubles play, with sophomores
Ashley Gao and
Rachel Bronkema scoring the team's point at the No. 2 position. The duo defeated Kiliam Doran and Sarah McLann, 8-4. At No. 3, freshmen
Arya Jemal and
Amanda Izes fought but fell 8-9 (5) to Lisa Doblier and Abbey Schmidt.
Bronkema earned double-winner status in singles action, easily handling Schmidt, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5. Junior
Alli Wong also notched a point, winning 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 against Melissa Mashburn, while Jemal at No. 4 defeated McLann, 6-3, 6-2. Freshmen Julia Gohkberg and
Rachel Hechinger both pushed their matches to third set tiebreaks, but were edged at No. 2 and No. 6, respectively.
The Garnet will resume match play tomorrow, facing Eastern Carolina University at 1:00 p.m.
