COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.-Competing in the Centennial Conference Indoor Championships at Ursinus College, the Swarthmore College men's track and field team finished sixth out of nine teams with 50 points.
Johns Hopkins won the conference title by a narrow margin with 195 points, ahead of Haverford (184), Ursinus (66), Gettysburg (65) and Franklin & Marshall (56) in the top five. Swarthmore was not far behind F&M and its result was a two-place improvement over last season's eighth-place finish in the indoor championship.
The distance medley relay team of Corey Branch, Jordan Reyes, Dominic Castro-Wehr and Paul Green crossed the finish line first with a time of 10:28.99, the fifth-fastest in program history and the best since 2007. The event, which consists of 1200-, 400-, 800- and 1600-meter legs, was won by the Garnet for the first time in Centennial Conference history.
Freshman Daniel Belkin also medaled for Swarthmore by placing third in the high jump with a PR of 1.85 meters. Ethan Lee picked up points after finishing fifth in the 400-meter dash (51.57) as did Spencer Friske, who also placed fifth in the 3k run (a personal best 8:44.47). The 4x200 team of Reyes, Lee, Peter Sayde and Benjamin Warren came in fifth (136.77) along with the 4x400 foursome of Warren, Reyes, Lee and Alex Crane (3:30.48).
Jerry Qin set a new school record in the heptathalon with a score of 3,849. Nolan Hofstee also broke the previous record and finished with a total of 3,835.
Swarthmore begins the outdoor season on Apr. 1 and 2 at Widener's Danny Curran Invitational.
