Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. –Senior Chelsea Matzo recorded four hits as the Swarthmore College softball team split its final two games on Friday, March 13 at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The Garnet routed Curry by an 11-1 score in five innings before ending the day with a 3-2 setback against Nazareth.
After yielding a run in the top of the first against Curry (3-4), Swarthmore scored 11 unanswered runs and at least once in every inning. Senior
Christen Boas Hayes had an RBI single to tie the game in the bottom of the first, and classmate Madarasz rocketed an infield single in the second to plate freshman
Fran Reckers and put the Garnet ahead for good.
Swarthmore tallied three runs in the second, five in the third and two in the fourth to earn its fourth victory of the season. Jensen most notably drove in three runs on a pair of doubles, which included capping the scoring with a blast to center field that scored Reckers in the fourth.
Freshman
Frankie Ponziani picked up her first collegiate win by going the distance in the circle. She surrendered six hits and one run while only issuing one walk. Rebecca Black of Curry suffered the loss after surrendering 10 hits and eight runs, including two earned, over two frames.
Later in the day, Nazareth (6-4) took control by scoring once in the second and twice in the third. Swarthmore, however, did not give up and made a valiant effort to at least tie the game and force extras in the bottom of the seventh. After the first two batters were retired, seniors
Laurie Sellars and Matzko got the offense going with back-to-back singles, and Boas Hayes followed with a shot to right that put the Garnet on the board.
Sara Planthaber then hit a single to right that sent home Matzko, but the sophomore was thrown out to end the game by trying to advance to second.
Nicole Bayona of Nazareth hurled a complete game to earn the win. She surrendered nine hits and two runs, which were both earned, and nine hits while striking out three and walking three.
Mary Olesnavich suffered just her first loss of the season in the circle for Swarthmore. She recorded one strikeout while giving up three runs, including two earned, and 10 hits over 5.1 frames.
Swarthmore (4-4) is slated to play its first of four consecutive doubleheaders on its new field at home on Tuesday, March 17 against Widener. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
