Chastity Hopkins set a career high for scoring and classmate
Elle Larsen recorded her 11th double-double of the season in leading the Swarthmore College women's basketball team to a 64-54 win over Washington College on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at the Cain Athletic Center.
Swarthmore came out with a vengeance while limiting the Shorewomen to just 18.8 percent shooting from the field in the first half. After Emily Hubley made a 3-pointer to put the hosts ahead 3-2, Larsen and junior
Jessica Jowdy hit back-to-back shots to put the Garnet in front for good.
Freshman
Melanie Ackerman drained a shot from downtown to put the visitors up by double figures at 20-8 with 9:03 left before Hopkins converted a field goal to give Swarthmore a 30-18 advantage at the break.
Washington College (9-15, CC 5-12) slowly chipped away at the deficit in the second half and had Jackie O'Connell set the tone by opening the scoring with a trey. Swarthmore responded and extended its lead to 13 on a Jowdy 3-pointer that created a 45-32, but the Shorewomen stormed back and brought the deficit down to 51-47 when Hubley converted a jumper at the 4:07 mark.
The Garnet, however, got four consecutive free throws from Larsen to push the lead back up to nine before eventually hanging on for the win. Ackerman canned two shots from the line to produce the final outcome.
Larsen lit up the stat sheet for Swarthmore, finishing with 18 points, 13 rebounds, five steals and four blocked shots. Jowdy contributed 15 points and eight boards, while Hopkins scored a career-best eight points by shooting 3-for-6 from the field and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe.
Hubley, who was playing in her final home game, led the Shorewomen by scoring 17 points. Carley Kendall contributed 11 points, five rebounds and three steals.
Swarthmore (9-15, CC 5-12) will look to conclude its 2014-15 campaign on a high note when it visits Haverford on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m.
