BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's basketball team bounced back with a 50-45 victory on the road at Bryn Mawr College on Wednesday night.
The Garnet dominated the opening quarter, leading 12-2 after 10 minutes of play. However, the Owls rallied in the second to take a 22-20 halftime advantage. The teams battled throughout the second half and Bryn Mawr had a one-point edge with 1:56 to play. Swarthmore then ended the game with six unanswered points to take the win.
Catherine Chadwell led all players with 15 points while adding eight rebounds.
Lily Czub shot 5-of-10 from the field and finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.
Carly Murphy also reached double figures with 10 points and grabbed four steals.
Vianna Kanyamiheto-Watson tallied eight points, seven boards, and four steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet started strong, outscoring the home team 12-2 in the opening quarter. Swarthmore shot 5-of-10 in scoring its 12 points while holding the Owls without a field goal during the period. Czub led the way with six points, Chadwell scored four, and Murphy added two.
- Bryn Mawr answered with a 12-3 run to begin the second and cut the deficit to one (15-14) with 5:22 on the clock. After five straight points by the Garnet, the Owls ended the stanza with eight in a row to seize a 22-20 lead at the break.
- Trailing 24-22 in the third, Swarthmore went on a 9-0 run to go in front 31-24 with 6:24 remaining. The Garnet shot 4-of-5 during the stretch and Chadwell sparked the surge with five points. However, Bryn Mawr came right back with seven unanswered to even the score at 31. Swarthmore took the lead again with five of the final seven points in the quarter to take a three-point cushion (36-33) into the fourth.
- Two free throws by Murphy upped the Garnet lead to five (40-35) with 8:07 to go in the final period. The Owls fought back with five consecutive points to tie the score at 40 at the 5:50 mark. The teams traded buckets before Kanyamiheto-Watson put Swarthmore back ahead, but Bryn Mawr drilled a three to claim a one-point edge (45-44) with 1:56 left.
- Czub sank a jumper to put her squad on top, 46-45, with 1:24 remaining. The Owls grabbed three offensive boards and had four chances to take back the lead but they could not find the basket. Chadwell then made a layup to increase the margin to three (48-45) with 26 seconds to play. Bryn Mawr was off the mark on a three-point attempt and Chadwell made two free throws at the other end to ice the game.
