Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior
Elle Larsen racked up 23 points and 14 rebounds, but it wasn't enough, as the Swarthmore College women's basketball team fell to Centennial Conference leader McDaniel by a 58-51 score on Saturday, Feb. 14 at Tarble Pavilion.
Larsen, who along with classmate Chasity Hopkins was recognized prior to the game, put Swarthmore on the board first by putting back a missed layup. McDaniel then responded with eight of the next nine points and went ahead 19-9 courtesy of a layup by Emma Wingerd with under seven minutes left in the half. Swarthmore was able to rally and tie the game twice on a 3-pointer followed by two free throws from junior
Abbey Deckard, but the Green Terror recovered and got another bucket from Wingerd to head to the locker room up 27-25.
Swarthmore stayed competitive with the league's first-place team for a good portion of the second half and only found itself trailing 40-37 when junior
Jessica Jowdy found Larsen for a jumper at the 11:09 mark. McDaniel, however, recovered and embarked on an 11-2 run to take control. A trey by Lindsey Nichols made it 51-39, and the Garnet got no closer than five the rest of the way.
Larsen's 23-point, 14-rebound effort was her 10th double-double of the season to lead the way for Swarthmore. Deckard recorded nine points, while Jowdy had five points, nine boards and three assists. Hopkins contributed three points and three rebounds in her final game at Tarble Pavilion.
McDaniel (22-1, CC 15-1) was led by Nichols and Wingerd's 14-point performances. Wingerd fell just shy of a double-double by grabbing nine rebounds, while Nichols corralled eight boards. Alyssa March finished with six points, five rebounds and two blocked shots.
Swarthmore (8-15, CC 4-12) continues Centennial Conference play when it visits Washington College on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m.
