Box Score NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Swarthmore College women's basketball team fell to #9-ranked New York University by a 69-49 score in the opening round of the NYU Holiday Classic on Saturday, Jan. 3 at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center.
Swarthmore found itself down 41-14 at the break after making only four field goals and shooting just 18.2 percent from the field through the first 20 minutes. NYU (9-0) jumped out to a 22-2 advantage by the 12:30 mark and never looked back, as nine Violets contributed to a balanced scoring attack in the frame for the hosts. Freshman
Hayley Raymond was a bright spot for the Garnet by scoring four points on her first two shot attempts.
The Garnet were more competitive in the second half and got an early basket from Raymond to start the scoring, but the deficit was too much to overcome. Melissa Peng answered with a 3-pointer to make it 44-16, and the Violets extended their lead to as many as 30 before running away with the convincing victory.
Amy Harioka, Drew Cabral and Maya Wasowicz each scored 10 points to pace NYU. Kaitlyn Read added seven steals and seven boards.
The Garnet were led by sophomore
Maggie O'Neil, who finished the game with 11 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. Junior

Jordyn Bell set a career high with four assists.
Swarthmore (3-6) will continue its challenging non-conference slate when it faces undefeated #1-ranked FDU-Florham, which won the national championship last season, tomorrow at 6 p.m.
