Box Score CARLISLE Pa. – The Swarthmore men's basketball team fell on the road to #7 Dickinson on Saturday Jan. 24 by the score of 72-45.
Dickinson's defense set the tone for the afternoon on the game's opening possession. Despite three opportunities to score, Swarthmore came away empty. Dickinson responded by taking the ball down the court and promptly putting themselves out in front on a 3-pointer from Gerry Wixted. Freshman Zack Yonda opened up the scoring for the Garnet with a lay-up at the 17:53 mark, making it a one-point game. That was the closest Swarthmore would get to the Red Devils all afternoon.
Dickinson was methodical on the defensive side of the ball, allowing just five field goals in the opening half. Despite themselves being held to a modest 37% shooting from the floor in the period Dickinson built a substantial lead early on. A layup by freshman Andrew Kaufmann made the score 23-11 with 6:36 on the clock. The Red Devils then finished the half with a 9-0 run, entering the locker room with a comfortable 32-11 lead.
The Garnet put an end to their scoreless stretch thanks to a Yonda jumper just over two minutes into the second half. A 3-point ball by sophomore Sam Lebryk made the score 40-22 at the 13:19 mark, but the visitors would not draw any closer as the game wound down.
Despite a scrappy defensive performance from the Garnet in which they forced 13 turnovers and held the Red Devils below 40% shooting for much of the game, Dickinson managed to ratchet up their offense down the stretch. When it was all said and done, the Garnet were unable to overcome their rough first half. Dickinson emerged victorious by the score of 72-45.
Yonda led the Garnet with a team-high 10 points while pulling down five rebounds in the contest. Fellow freshman Robbie Walsh collected a team-high seven rebounds for Swarthmore in the losing effort as well.
Dickinson was led by Wixted who picked up a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds in just 21 minutes of action. Brandon Angradi and Pete Yingst paced the Red Devils from downtown with three 3-pointers a piece en route to 13 and 11 points respectively.
Swarthmore will look to bounce back this weekend as they play host to Washington College on Tuesday Jan. 27 at 8:00 p.m.
