Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – The Swarthmore College men's basketball team was defeated 84-57 by Johns Hopkins on Saturday, Jan. 10 at Goldfarb Gymnasium.
Swarthmore (6-7, CC 2-4) fell behind quickly as Johns Hopkins (11-2, CC 5-1) developed a nice rhythm right from the start. Trailing 6-0 in the early going, Coach Kosmalski quickly went to his bench. Coming off a strong game earlier this week, freshman
Matt Brennan entered the game and promptly nailed a jumper, giving the Garnet their first points of the contest at the 17:17 mark.
The Blue Jays played strong team defense throughout the first half, limiting Swarthmore to long jump shots. Though the Garnet struggled to get the ball into the post, Swarthmore kept pace with a flurry of 3-pointers. A contested deep ball by sophomore
Luke McCartin slashed the deficit to 20-15 with 10 minutes remaining in the half.
The Blue Jays took advantage of numerous Swarthmore turnovers in the latter half of the opening period and capitalized on their high percentage scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, the Garnet cooled off from beyond the arc and struggled to find an offensive flow. Shooting at a 37% clip in the opening half, Swarthmore trailed 39-24 heading into the locker room.
Hopkins looked sharp to begin the second half. The Blue Jays scored 10 unanswered points in less than two minutes, prompting a Swarthmore timeout. The Hopkins lead fluctuated between 32 and 23 points throughout the remainder of the game. A layup at the 6:46 mark by freshman
Zack Yonda made the score 70-47, but the Garnet were unable to cut any further into the deficit.
Yonda led the way for the Garnet with a team-high 12 points including a perfect day from the charity stripe. McCartin and freshman
Andrew Kaufmann chipped in eight points apiece. Sophomore
Michael Rubayo made the most of his 14 minutes off the bench as well, bringing down a game-high seven rebounds and scoring six points of his own.
Johns Hopkins was led offensively by George Bugarinovic and Ryan Curran who scored 19 and 15 points respectively. The Blue Jays played an intense game on the defensive end of the court, garnering 13 steals and scoring 36 points off of 27 Swarthmore turnovers. This marks Hopkins seventh consecutive victory over Swarthmore dating back to 2011.
Swarthmore will look to bounce back on Tuesday when it heads to Westminster Md. to take on McDaniel College at 8 p.m.
