Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's soccer team played Neumann to a 0-0 scoreless draw on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at Clothier Field.
Swarthmore (6-1-1) had multiple opportunities to score early and outshot the Knights, 6-2, in the first half. Senior
Michael Stewart received a through ball that he shot on target, while sophomore
Billy Evers also had a good look from the top of the box that was saved by sophomore goalkeeper Dan Jones to keep the match scoreless.
In the second half, the Garnet continued to penetrate in its offensive third and nearly scored twice with just under 15 minutes remaining in regulation. Freshman
Marc Geschwind sent a shot that got past Jones and was headed for the back of the net, but Andrew Kelly dove to clear the ball at the last moment before it could go over the goal line. On the ensuing corner, junior
Alec McClean headed the ball off the crossbar that would be covered up by Jones.
Swarthmore created another opportunities off a corner kick and almost got on the board again in the waning minutes when sophomore
Ryan Meuth hammered a header off a cross from junior
Wyatt McCall, but the ball went wide right of the net.
In the second overtime session, the host school had another golden opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the 104th minute. Working from the left side of the box,
Rodrigo Hernandez chipped a pass that Geschwind tried to one touch into the back of the net. A Neumann defender, however, once again stepped in at the last moment to clear the ball away and force a corner kick. The Garnet continued to attack through the remainder of the match until the final whistle sounded signaling a scoreless draw.
Junior
Tyler Zon made three saves for Swarthmore, which commanding advantages of 20-9 in total shots and 11-0 on corner kick opportunities in the match. Jones of Neumann (0-6-1) turned away four of the shots he faced.
Swarthmore resumes Centennial Conference play when it visits Johns Hopkins on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 4:30 p.m.
