COMPLETE RESULTSFredricksburg, Va. - The Swarthmore College women's tennis team competed in the ITA Southeast Regional tournament over the weekend at the University of Mary Washington. Nine Swarthmore players participated in this fall opener, all earning wins throughout the tournament.
Freshmen
Ashley Gao and May Dong both reached the quarterfinals of their respective singles draws. Gao defeated Kendra Tetrick of Grove City College 6-0, 7-5, while Dong had a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Alyssia Deutsch of Penn State Harrisburg. In the Blue 1 doubles draw, Gao paired with freshman
Rachel Bronkema to dominate Molly Kowalski and Hannah Molk of Muhlenburg by a score of 8-1.
Junior Abigail Schmidt reached the finals of the Blue 6 singles draw, convincingly defeating players from Moravian and Goucher, before edging out her opponent from Randolph-Macon. She later partnered with freshman
Sophia Schuster to earn an 8-2 doubles consolation victory over Julie Lazer and Kiran Pant of Washington College.
In the championship doubles draw, junior
Jackie Lane and sophomore
Alli Wong teamed up to notch a first round 8-5 victory over Shannon Ramsey and Emily Stumpfig of St. Mary's College of Maryland.
Freshmen
Maria Cuervo and
Anna Scheibmeir also competed at the tournament. The duo fell to a team from Washington College, but outplayed Caitlin Gallagher and Abby Payson of Haverford, winning 8-3 in the consolation draw.
The team will now prepare for the Swarthmore Invitational, which is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 4.
