No. 17 Women's Tennis Rolls Through Simmons to Begin NCAA Tournament

AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 17 Swarthmore College women's tennis team opened its NCAA Tournament run with a 4-0 rout of Simmons University in the first round on Friday afternoon.
 
The Garnet dropped just three total games in a dominant performance. Lola Diaz, Erin Li, Paola Almeda, Kathleen Shiffer, Lisa Messier, Hannah Kideckel, and Uma Pogrebivsky all recorded wins in the match.
 
Swarthmore advances to Saturday's second round where it will battle No. 16 Amherst College, the host for this weekend's preliminary rounds. The Mammoths defeated Manhattanville College, 4-0, in their first-round matchup.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Diaz and Li got the Garnet going with a 6-0 triumph at first doubles. Shortly after, Almeda and Shiffer clinched the point with a 6-0 win at the third spot. Riya Rao and Ella Strickler led their match at second doubles, 5-0, when play was stopped.
 
- Pogrebivsky had little trouble with her opponent at sixth singles, rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 success to put Swarthmore up two.
 
- Kideckel also blanked her foe at fifth singles, 6-0, 6-0, to put the Garnet one point away from victory.
 
- Messier did the honors, securing a Swarthmore win with a 6-0, 6-0 decision at the fourth flight.
 
- Diaz, Li, and Strickler all won their respective opening sets and had an edge in the second when the match came to an end.

The Garnet (16-6) take on Amherst on Saturday at 2 p.m.
