SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior
Joe Keedy recorded a double-double and made four clutch free throws down the stretch to lift the Swarthmore College men's basketball team to a 63-60 win over Ursinus on Thursday, Feb. 6 at Tarble Pavilion. With the victory, the Garnet swept the season series against the Bears for the first time since the 1995-96 season.
Swarthmore built up a 59-49 lead with less than five minutes to play on a pair of free throws made by freshman
Michael Rubayo. The Bears, however, stormed back and rattled off 11 straight to go ahead 60-59 on a 3-pointer by senior Ryan Adams with 1:42 remaining.
After
Sam Lebryk turned the ball over with 33 seconds left, Ursinus had an opportunity to extend its lead by having the ball and the Garnet having to foul with the shot clock turned off. The ball was successfully passed in to Pat Vasturia, but tight defense by freshman
Chris Bourne forced the senior to be called for traveling and turn the ball over back to the Garnet.
Keedy then took over in the key situation, drawing a foul and then making the two ensuing free throws to put Swarthmore ahead by one at 61-60 with only 13 seconds remaining. Following a missed jumper by Jesse Krasna, Keedy grabbed the rebound and converted two more charity shots with three seconds on the clock to allow the Garnet to escape with the win.
The teams played a first half that was nip-and-tuck with seven ties and six lead changes. Swarthmore used a 9-2 run to take a 24-20 lead at the 7:06 mark on a 3-pointer by senior
Jay Kober that was set up by Keedy after the teams played a one-possession game for more than 12 straight minutes. The Garnet ended the half by scoring eight of the final 10 points to take a 32-25 lead at the break.
Keedy finished the game with 10 points, which including going a perfect 6-for-6 from the line, and a career-high 13 rebounds to lead Swarthmore in the victory. Kober fell just shy of a double-double by recording 18 points and nine rebounds, while Rubayo contributed a career-best eight points off the bench.
Ursinus (3-17, CC 1-12) was paced by Adams and Krasna. Adams had 15 points and Krasna finished with 11 points to go along with four assists.
Swarthmore (6-14, CC 3-10) continues Centennial Conference action when it visits Johns Hopkins on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 3 p.m.
