Ursinus Holds Off Late Attempted Rally by Women’s Basketball

Box Score
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Propelled by four players in double figures and a strong second half, Ursinus dealt the Swarthmore College women's basketball team a 68-58 loss on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at Helfferich. With the victory, the Bears swept the season series between the schools and put an end to the Garnet's season-high four-game winning streak.

After a back-and-forth start, Katie Lytle almost single-handedly put the Garnet ahead by an 18-14 score at the midway point by netting 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 at the line. Ursinus, however, hung around and went ahead by three on a trifecta from the left arc by senior Diamond Lewis.

Caroline Shimrock, a sophomore, then capped a 16-4 Bear run with a trey that gave the hosts a 28-22 advantage at the 4:31 mark. Following an Elle Larsen bucket that temporarily put the Garnet ahead by one, two free throws from Lewis made it 33-32 in favor of the Bears at the break.

Ursinus (8-11, CC 5-8) stayed in control at the beginning of the second half by netting eight straight points. Jessica Forada and Shimrock contributed two field goals apiece to give the Bears a 41-32 cushion to work with.

Swarthmore attempted to rally and came within a point when sophomore Abbey Deckard canned a shot from downtown to create a 42-41 score with 13:30 on the clock. But that was as close as the Garnet would come, as the Bears went up by as many as 12 before eventually coming away with the 10-point win.

Lytle and Larsen combined for 49 points and 19 rebounds to lead Swarthmore in the losing effort. Larsen notched a double-double with 23 points and 10 boards, while Lytle contributed 26 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Freshman Maggie O'Neil finished with four points, four rebounds and a career-high five blocks off the bench.

Shimrock led four Ursinus players in twin figures with 15 points. Lewis posted 11 points and five assists, and freshman Libby Lannon added a game-high six swipes.

Swarthmore (12-9, CC 7-8) will have the weekend off and return to action when it visits McDaniel on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m.
