Lia Carlson and freshman
Alli Wong each secured double wins as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute narrowly edged out the Swarthmore women's tennis team (0-2) by a score of 5-2 on Sunday, Feb. 23.
Carlson and Wong opened the match with an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. At No. 1 singles, Carlson dominated Casey Olsen 6-1, 6-1 and Wong followed suit, earning a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 against Amanda Alexander.
Freshman
Olivia Cheng also defeated her opponent at No. 5 singles, winning a close first set, 7-5, and then cruising through the second set for a 6-3 win.
Junior
Gayatri Iyengar and senior
Katie Samuelson both pushed their matches at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, to three sets. Iyengar was edged out by Skidmore, 6-3, 3-6, 10-12, and Samuelson rallied for a comeback but was defeated by Ham 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-10. Emily Aaldenberg clinched the match for the Engineers with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over senior
Brooke Wilkins at No. 6 singles.
The Garnet women will resume play on their spring break trip to California in two weeks. They will compete against Carnegie Mellon, Rochester and the University of the South.
