SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior Joe Keedy hit a clutch layup in the waning seconds of regulation to propel the Swarthmore College men's basketball team to a thrilling 72-70 victory over Washington College on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at Tarble Pavilion.

The second half, which featured five ties and five lead changes, rightfully came down to a photo finish between the competing schools. Trailing 68-64 in the final minutes, the Garnet got three straight layups from freshman Chris Bourne, classmate Luke McCartin and sophomore Sam Liebert to regain the lead with just over 30 seconds left.

After Pat Morgan was fouled and converted two free throws to tie the game at 70 with 26.6 seconds remaining, the Garnet had the ball and an the opportunity to take the last shot. Working from up top, Keedy drove through traffic and was able to sink a layup with just 3.5 seconds left. A desperation attempt from midcourt by junior Sean Brooks then hit the front of the rim, allowing the Garnet to escape with the win.

The teams exchanged two leads and were tied four times in a first half that featured several runs for both sides. Tony Hawkins put the Shoremen ahead 19-12 with a layup at the 11:09 mark, but the Garnet came out of a timeout and scored 10 of the next 13. McCartin drained a 3-pointer after receiving a pass from Keedy to tie the game at 22s.

Swarthmore appeared as though it would carry a slim lead into halftime, as Jordan Federer was fouled away from the basket and canned two charity shots to give the hosts a 31-30 advantage. Washington College, however, would take a two-point edge into the break by getting a long trifecta from freshman James Drury that was banked in from nearly 40 feet away.

Bourne led three Swarthmore players by netting 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 shooting from the line. He also grabbed six boards. McCartin and Barkley contributed 13 and 11 points respectively. Keedy added a team-leading four helpers and five points, which included providing the late heroics for the second straight outing at Tarble Pavilion after also coming through in a 63-60 win over Ursinus on Feb. 6.

Morgan and Drury paced Washington College with 19 points apiece. Brooks finished the game with 10 points, five assists and four boards.

Swarthmore (7-17, CC 4-13) will conclude its 2013-14 campaign when it hosts archrival Haverford on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m. Five seniors will be recognized prior to the contest for their contributions to the program.
