Women’s Basketball Defeats F&M, 64-50, for Fourth Straight Win

Box Score
SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior Katie Lytle scored 16 points and grabbed her 1,000th career rebound in leading the Swarthmore College women's basketball team to a 64-50 triumph over Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Tarble Pavilion. The Garnet broke open a close game in the second half by not allowing the Diplomats to hit a field goal for 10 minutes to cruise to their season-best fourth straight victory.

The first half featured five lead changes and was tightly contested, as neither team led by more than five points. After Jessica Dowicz gave the Diplomats a 22-21 edge with a layup at the 6:12 mark, Lytle answered with a good jumper and sophomore Abbey Deckard canned a 3-pointer to put the Garnet ahead. Deckard also put the Garnet on top for good by sinking two free throws to break a 26-all tie before senior Kayla Moritzky capped the scoring with a pair of charity shots to give the hosts a 34-29 advantage at the break.

Swarthmore (12-8, CC 7-7) continued its momentum into the second half and went up by double figures for the first time at 43-33 on an Elle Larsen jumper that was set up by Moritzky. The Garnet then rode the wave of a 21-3 run to break the game open and never looked back.

Lytle and Moritzky each posted a double-double to lead Swarthmore. Lytle finished with 16 points and 13 boards to end the game with exactly 1,000 rebounds in her illustrious career. She also became the third player in program history after Heather Kile '02 and Kathryn Stockbower '11 to accumulate at least 1,000 career points and 1,000 rebounds. Moritzky finished with 11 points and 10 assists, while Larsen netted 19.

Franklin & Marshall (3-16, CC 1-11), which has lost 11 games in a row, was paced by senior Kristina McCarthy's double-double effort. She finished with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. Sam Plunkett corralled 11 boards and Emma Lisle scored 10 points.

Swarthmore will look to remain in contention for a conference playoff berth when it visits Ursinus on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m.
