SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Paced by four double-digit scorers, Franklin & Marshall dealt the Swarthmore College men's basketball team a 72-65 defeat on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Tarble Pavilion.
In a game that featured five ties and seven lead changes, Swarthmore started off on fire by canning its first two field goal attempts after
Jay Kober blocked a Terrel Phelps shot on the opening possession. Freshman
Chris Bourne eventually put the Garnet ahead by double figures at 18-8 by converting a layup with 11:44 on the clock.
Franklin & Marshall (13-6, CC 9-3), however, started chipping away at the deficit and was able to take its first lead when freshman Jared Wright hit a pair of free throws to make it 20-19 with just under eight minutes left. But Swarthmore would quickly recover and end the half on a 10-4 run, which was capped by a
Karl Barkley 3-pointer that created a 36-31 score at the break.
The Diplomats once again fought back in the second half and got a trifecta from Matt Porter at the 9:30 mark that broke a 54-54 deadlock. With several Swarthmore players in foul trouble, sophomore Devin Figueroa made both of his attempts at the stripe to build the visitor lead up to eight at 68-60 with under five minutes left. The Garnet never recovered and eventually suffered a seven-point defeat.
Swarthmore was led by seniors
Joe Keedy and Kober in the losing effort. Keedy had 13 points and eight rebounds, while Kober finished with 14 points, five boards and five assists. Sophomore
