Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Sophomore
Chris Bourne recorded his second double-double of the season to lead the Swarthmore College men's basketball team to a 76-64 victory over Bryn Athyn on Saturday, Dec. 20 at Tarble Pavilion.
Swarthmore (4-5) scored the first seven points of the game and led from wire to wire. After senior
Karl Barkley got the scoring started by nailing a 3-pointer, sophomore
Sam Lebryk converted a layup and set up a jumper canned by Bourne.
Bryn Athyn kept the deficit in single digits and came within four on two occasions, which included getting a layup from Troy Steed that made it 23-19 at the midway point of the stanza. But the Lions would come no closer, as the Garnet closed the half on a 17-6 run and did not allow the visitors to convert a field goal for more than an eight-minute span until Jihaad Fluellen hit a buzzer-beating layup.
The Garnet, which led 45-28 at recess, kept its lead in twin figures for practically the entire second half to earn their second non-conference victory of the year. Freshman
Zack Yonda canned one of his three shots from downtown to give the hosts a commanding 61-42 advantage at the 9:52 mark before the visitors attempted to rally.
Stephen Johnson made a jumper to bring the margin down to single digits at 67-58 with 2:33 remaining, but Yonda drove through traffic on the other end to put the Garnet back up by 11. Freshman
Robbie Walsh, junior
Shane Loeffler and Barkley all made free throws down the stretch to seal the 12-point win.
Bourne led four Garnet players in twin figures with 17 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Walsh finished with 13 points and nine boards, while Barkley netted 16 and Yonda added 11. Lebryk dished out five assists.
Bryn Athyn (0-8) was paced by Steed's 13-point effort. Johnson added Deion Boyer contribured 11 points apiece.
Swarthmore will take a break for the holidays and return to action when it competes against Eastern on Friday, Jan. 2 at 2 p.m. in a tournament hosted by Roanoke.
